3 Amazing Tools to Make Every Recruitment Marketer a Hero

3 Amazing Tools to Make Every Recruitment Marketer a Hero Digital marketers need skills skills like: Time management (and even time warping). Being a techie, as well as getting offline as it’s so distracting. Keeping recruiters happy 24/7. Commercial awareness getting and delivering ROI as well as mailers, tweets and content. Technology can really help with this so I thought I’d share what I show the recruitment marketers that I mentor. I use lots of apps and software, but these are the ones which are at the top of my list right now: 1. Trello â€" get organised and effective: I’ve blogged about this before, and I  run Barclay Jones with it. Not a day goes past when I say to myself (and often out loud to my team) â€" what would we do without Trello? Thanks for introducing me to @trello @LisaMariJones Its changed my life! Ending the week feeling super organised ?? #trello Melanie Ross (@ItsMelanieRoss) September 18, 2015 Each of our client projects is run through it as an internal project management tool.  When we start working with a new client, we create a Trello board for them and work with them through it to generate lots of lovely outcomes.  It massively improves communication, visibility of activities and it means that I can focus on specific clients / projects without getting overwhelmed with all of the other tech that I am surrounded by. So many of the marketers and techies I mentor suffer from option paralysis,  that this system really helps with focus and delivery. There’s nothing like moving a card to Done to give you a smile. It also works really well on mobile too! 2. Buffer â€" scheduling, time warping and metrics: ‘nuff said by lots of others. My team (and my clients) use either Buffer Awesome or Buffer Business. £10/ £50 a month to run some of your social streams is pennies and the benefits are huge. .@twitter tip from @LisaMariJones: Use @buffer to schedule your tweets for when your candidates are online. #RecruitClever Barclay Jones Making Recruiters More Successful (@BarclayJones) February 27, 2015 Note: Never aim for a totally free real estate of social media â€" you’re kidding yourself if you think your time is worthless. It’s the most precious thing you have and one of the few entities on the planet you can’t recycle! Buffer is really good on mobile too! 3. Popplet â€" brainstorming, content creating and generally awesome: One of the marketers I work with introduced me to Popplet. Seriously, I love it.  It helps me get my head straight.  It’s great for brainstorming and mind mapping. It also helps me get things in to a graphic format to help with client presentations and also ideas for my own business. What tools do you rate? How do you stay organised? Let me know in the comments below! [Featured image: Shutterstock]

Meet Sara Sutton Fell, Founder of FlexJobs.com

Meet Sara Sutton Fell, Founder of FlexJobs.com Name: Sara Sutton Fell Age: 39 Location: Boulder, Colorado Where did you go to college and what did you study? UC Berkeley, an interdisciplinary major for “Society, Technology, and the Environment” Tell us about your first job after college. Was it what you expected? Instead of finding my first job after college, I actually created my first job and it was not really after college as much as it was more of a “hiatus” during college. When I was 21, a friend and I both took time off from our junior years in college to start one of the first online entry-level job services, JobDirect. It was a crazy experience for many reasons, including that neither of us had any business or computer experience. Yet we were passionate about the idea, and we grew and sold the company 4 years later. The experience wasn’t what I expected, but that is because it surpassed every possible expectation I thought to have as a college student. I didn’t peg myself as an entrepreneur at the time, so this was a surprise experience in every aspect. One that changed my life for the better in many ways. Tell us about your company, FlexJobs.com. FlexJobs is the leading site for finding a job that offers some type of flexibility within professional positions hiring now, including telecommuting jobs, flex/part-time hours, etc. Our staff hand screens each position to guarantee there are no ads, scams or too good to be true offers. As a result, we guarantee each job listed is legit and the site currently has 50+ career fields and has helped over 500,000 job seekers to date. We are thrilled to have earned quite a few awards, including being named a Top Career Site by Forbes, and cultivated fantastic partnerships, such as one with Working Mother where we serve as their official job board. What inspired you to start FlexJobs? I was pregnant with my first child in 2007, and realized I wanted to find a job that would allow me more work flexibility so that I could be more present for my family. I was open to telecommuting, freelance, consulting, part-time or flexible schedules jobs, but in my search I kept running into scams and jobs that just weren’t in my career path. Having had my experience of starting a successful job service before, and firmly believing that these jobs existed and should be easier to find, I was in a unique position to start a company to create what I was looking for. What has been the toughest part about growing your company? Two things â€" one, staying ahead of growth and not allowing bottlenecks to happen! They first started happening with me, and I quickly realized that I needed to start delegating more. As our team grows, we try our best to hire before we urgently need to, while not hiring too early before the role will have enough to do. The second is keeping my own work-life balance! The name of our company is FlexJobs, so obviously it’s flexible, but sometimes I can be my own worst enemy in working too much. I have to be very aware of creating a balance for my family and my personal life as well, and not just get caught up in all that I want to do with the business. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start an internet business? Two differentiators for me between an internet business and an offline business are the ability to use “the cloud” and all of the different online marketing avenues you can utilize. I started FlexJobs as a virtual company, meaning that our entire team work from home offices all over the country, and even one team member in Europe. That means that our team can work from anywhere, anytime, and we can do it because we utilize “the cloud”. Also, with online marketing, really look at what will work for your business â€" SEO, SEM, blog marketing, social media, retargeting, etc. There are so many online marketing opportunities to help drive your audience to your website. What career advice would you give to women who are just starting out after college? Listen to your intuition. Women often overlook their own gut instinct when it comes to career decisions because of what they “should” do, or what people tell them to do, but it’s important to put real value on what you want to do and what makes the most sense for you. Also, don’t put too much pressure on every career decision. It is highly unlikely that you’ll only have one job in your career, so each one is just a single opportunity that will lead to others. If it doesn’t work out, you’ll learn from it and move on to the next one.

5 Things You Need To Launch Your Own Business - Classy Career Girl

5 Things You Need To Launch Your Own Business There are many compelling reasons to start your own business. While it means a few years of stress and long hours, the payoff can be incredible. You get far more control over your own life. You get to choose when you work. If you build your own team, you get to decide who works for you and what attributes you want in your workforce.  Lets not forget that you are in charge of how much you make and you dont have to wait for your boss to give you a raise to get the salary you want. Its all up to you to put the hard work in. Personality-wise, you’ll need bravery and gumption! You’ll need to be willing to turn into an early bird and a night owl for a while and you’ll need to know how to say no. But what about other things you might need? 5 Things You Need To Launch Your Own Business 1. Money Of course, one of the first things that you might think you need is money. The honest truth is that these days you dont need that much money to start a business, especially if you are prepared to dive in and learn how to do things yourself. Many businesses can now be started with less than $500 and most of the time, you can just use your savings or cash flow your expenses.  Thats what I did when I started. What money was coming in and how much could I spend of that money? Its a simple math game. Say you are launching an online e-commerce business. You’ll need money for a website, maybe a web designer, and your materials and tools. I always recommend starting simply. You dont need a big fancy website to start. To be honest, you dont even need a website if you use the phone and go to in-person networking events with potential clients. Eventually, youll want to add it to your to-do list but dont let this stop you from making a sale. So now, lets say you have a bigger project. You may need to get an office, or a factory or another type of space. For this type of business, you can rely on your own savings, but that might get eaten up quickly. It might also be a good idea to keep your savings intact for further down the line. Another alternative is that you can get a line of credit loan. This will help you get the business up on its feet. Once that has happened, you can pay it back and start making money. That money can then be used to hire new staff or move to bigger workspace. Remember, this is not a time to be a big spender. Practice being frugal as much as possible. 2. Space If you’re launching a startup online business, you may be able to work from home. Even still, it might be wise to set up your own workspace or office. Doing so helps keep you focused and away from potential distractions. It can also make you feel a bit more serious about the business. It could be the case that you can’t work from home, but need a space. Coworking is a great solution if this is the case. Most major cities have at least a few co-working offices. These are also great places to network and meet new people. Plus, at some of these places, you can have your own phone line and set up a PO box also. 3. Website Of course, something else you will most likely need is a website. It is the single most common way that people find out more information about things these days. A website is a good starting point, as you have total control over what goes on there. You can pick your best pictures, write the best description of your business. It is also handy for displaying opening times or working hours, and contact details of course. However, don’t forget the power of social media too. A presence on Facebook and Twitter will go a long way too. 4. Legal Paperwork If you are just getting started, youll want to investigate the proper legal paperwork youll need in your state. Youll want to figure out if your business should be a sole proprietor, LLC or Corporation. You may want to look into online sites like LegalZoom or talk to your lawyer  and CPA. 5. Support A big mistake new entrepreneurs make is doing it alone and not having a partner, mastermind group or coach to help you. My  business changed overnight when I invested in a coach and I continue to have a mastermind group and accountability partner.  A community of support is truly what you need  so you are  never  alone in this. Check these 5 things off and youll be well on your way to a successful business! Good luck!

3 Steps To Dealing With Troublesome Employees

3 Steps To Dealing With Troublesome Employees Dealing with troublesome and difficult employees is not something any of us enjoys doing. But if they  make excuses, miss deadlines or arrive late continuously, this can have a significant effect on your livelihood. It lowers productivity, raises emotions and can be detrimental to gaining customers. It can also encourage your other employees to act in the same manner. Before you know it, your once successful company can hit rock bottom. So as unpleasant as it might be, you need to handle it sooner rather than later. Follow these three steps and regain control today. 3 Steps To Dealing With Troublesome Employees 1. Take action If you feel an employee has frequently crossed the line or taken advantage, you need to take action right away. The worst thing you can do is ignore the problem and let it develop. The best way to do this is by gathering information and evidence to support your claims. Watch how this employee communicates with others and note down when they arrive and leave. You can also compile a list of dates when they missed a deadline or called in sick. Also, talk to your other members of your staff to determine the extent of the problem. In addition to this, you should also do some research. Read a statutory sick pay entitlement guide or refer to your employees contract. This will help back up your claims and could help you come up with a solution. 2. Share your evidence Now you have your evidence, you need to talk to your employee privately.  Calmly voice your concerns about their recent behavior  and ask them if they are experiencing any issues. They may be completely oblivious to their bad  behavior or they could have a reason why they have been acting this way. Listen carefully to their responses to your allegations. If they disagree with what you are accusing them of, share your evidence with them. This could be the wake-up call they need to see the error of their ways. Talk them through what you consider being professional behavior  and the terms stated in their contract. 3. Help them change Now your employee has accepted your accusation, you need to discuss how their attitude and habits need to change. For instance, if they are struggling to get in on time each day, you could suggest offering them a different shift. Or you could set up weekly meetings to provide feedback on their efforts. Ask them what they need to boost their productivity and confidence. Create an action plan with goals for your employee to stick to each day or week. Additionally, you should also set a review date that gives them enough time to show an improvement. This will not only be beneficial for them but also show you how you can be a better boss all round. If, after you have followed these steps no improvements have been made, a termination of employment may be necessary. Just the threat of losing their job is enough for many people to change their ways. But if not, saying goodbye to this employee could be the best thing for your company.

Phrases to delete from your resume and LinkedIn profile - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

Phrases to delete from your resume and LinkedIn profile I still remember my shock at seeing clichés similar to “I can work on my own initiative as well as part of a team’ in 19 out of 20 applications I’ve received for the first role I was recruiting for when I started my recruitment career 10 years ago. Even now, I often receive resumes with phrases such as ‘Self-motivated team player’; “responsible” or “innovative”. If your resume if full of these mundane and boring phrases (with no examples to back them up with!) it is going to be difficult for you to stand out or for recruiters to really see your value proposition. It is not that certain ‘power words’ can’t be used on your resume. But you want to use them effectively so that you don’t sound like everyone else. The problem is these words are very subjective. Anyone can say they are efficient or well organized or that they have great leadership skills. NOTHING about that makes you stand out from the competition unless you show some examples. Here are some tips on how to improve your resume/LinkedIn profile: Use evidence and concrete examples to back up your statements. Let’s suppose you’re an internal auditor who’s implemented new payroll and tax accounting systems that saved your company $200k in staff costs over the next 3 years. It is a result driven example that demonstrates you being innovative or good at problem solving. Perhaps you’re an admin assistant and you’ve managed switchboard with 8 incoming lines, routing an average of 300 calls per day. You immediately sound more impressive than a candidate who simply says they have great organizational skills. I see lots of resumes of people who are ‘results-driven’. Says who? I’d suggest adding some information that actually PROVES your drive for results. In which ways has your performance outpaced that of your peers? Perhaps you’ve earned 3 promotions in 18 months. If so, put that information on your resume. Use numbers. Numbers are great for demonstrating your skills and expertise. Did you increase revenue, saved time or money? How many events did you organize? How many clients did you deal with every month? Another clichéd quote I see on resumes is ‘proven success’ or ‘proven track record’. Again, unless you prove it, I wouldn’t bother with such phrases. If you’ve exceeded quota every year for the past 3 years or finished all projects under budget, then mention that. These tangible achievements will help a hiring person understand the scope of your work and the reasons behind your career progression. To summarize, remove all redundant phrases from your resume and LinkedIn profile. Provide specific details of your achievements and watch your interview invites go up!
